CALL FOR MAY TO SHOW LEADERSHIP ON BREXIT

The SNP’s Westminster Leader has called for leadership from Theresa May, calling on the Prime Minister to “come off the fence and have the courage of her convictions to ensure we stay in the Single Market and Customs Union.”

In Prime Minister’s Questions, Ian Blackford MP asked why the Prime Minister had not been straightforward about her position on the EU, following an interview on LBC when she would not confirm how she would vote in a second EU referendum.

This morning, Chancellor Philip Hammond admitted a “cloud of uncertainty” is hanging over the UK economy.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“The Prime Minister couldn’t answer the question because she is hamstrung by a reduced parliamentary majority and a divided party of right-wing Brexiteers.

“The SNP is the only party in this House which is united on the issue of Brexit –  we know crashing out of the Single Market and the Customs Union will cost Scotland 80 000 jobs and 2 000 pounds per person, per year.

“The Chancellor has admitted there is a ‘cloud of uncertainty’ hanging over the UK economy, and even Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson has admitted Brexit could be a ‘hit’ the UK economy won’t recover from.

“Theresa May must make membership of the Single Market and Customs Union her priority.”
