PMQs: TORIES ISOLATED OVER BREXIT
Ian Blackford MP said the Tories are isolated over Brexit, and called on the Prime Minister to respect the Scottish Parliament following a vote in Holyrood to refuse consent to the UK government’s Withdrawal Bill.
The Scottish National Party, the Labour Party, the Lib Dems and the Greens all voted to refuse consent to the UK government’s Brexit plans.
The Scottish Parliament voted 93 to 30 against the bill last night.
Commenting, the SNP Westminster Leader said:
“Theresa May failed to reassure the House today that she will respect the Scottish Parliament.
“The vote last night showed us just how out of touch the Tories are.
“If this government forces through the legislation – without consent of the Scottish Parliament – the Prime Minister will be doing so in the full knowledge that they are breaking the 20 year old devolution settlement.
“Any constraints placed on Holyrood’s existing powers without Holyrood’s consent would be a democratic outrage – and it would fly in the face of the fundamental principles of devolution.
“It would be even more outrageous if having seen Holyrood specifically refuse consent to this bill, the Tories imposed it on Scotland against our will.
“The Scottish Parliament has spoken loudly and clearly – it’s now up to the UK government to respect that vote and ditch their power grab.”
